Profile and preferences overview

Your profile is how teammates see you in Milestone. Preferences control notifications, theme, time zone, and defaults. Configure these so Milestone fits how you work.

Prerequisites: None. All users can edit their own profile and preferences.

Profile Information

Your profile is how team members see you in Milestone. A complete, accurate profile helps with collaboration and makes it easier for team members to identify you and understand your role.

Display name is how you appear throughout Milestone. Use a name that team members will recognize, whether that's your full name, first name and last initial, or a preferred nickname. Consistency with other tools helps team members identify you easily.

Avatar or profile picture helps team members recognize you visually. A clear, professional photo works best, but any image that represents you helps. Profile pictures appear on tasks, comments, and activity feeds, making collaboration more personal and easier to follow.

Bio or description provides context about your role or expertise. While optional, a brief bio helps team members understand what you do and when to involve you. This context improves collaboration and helps with task assignment.

Contact information like email is used for notifications and account management. Keeping contact information current ensures you receive important notifications and can recover your account if needed.

Notification Preferences

Notifications keep you informed about important changes, but too many notifications create distraction. Configuring notification preferences helps you stay informed without being overwhelmed.

Email notifications are sent to your registered email address. You can choose which events trigger email notifications: task assignments, mentions, due date reminders, or workspace updates. Email notifications are useful for important updates you need to see even when away from Milestone.

In-app notifications appear within Milestone. These real-time notifications keep you informed while you're working. You can customize which events trigger in-app notifications, balancing awareness with focus.

Push notifications on mobile devices alert you even when Milestone isn't open. These notifications are useful for urgent updates but can be distracting. Configure push notifications based on your need for immediate awareness versus your need for focus.

Display and Theme Preferences

Visual preferences affect comfort and productivity. Configuring display and theme settings helps you work comfortably for extended periods.

Theme selection includes light and dark themes. Light themes work well in bright environments and feel familiar. Dark themes reduce eye strain in low-light conditions and are popular for extended work sessions. Choose based on your environment and preference.

Color scheme customization lets you adjust accent colors and interface colors. Some teams use brand colors. Others prefer high-contrast schemes for accessibility. Customization helps you create a workspace that feels comfortable and professional.

Font size and display density affect how much information fits on screen and how readable it is. Larger fonts improve readability but show less information. Smaller fonts show more but can strain eyes. Find the balance that works for you.

Language and Regional Settings

Language and regional settings localize Milestone for your location and preferences.

Language selection determines the interface language. Milestone supports multiple languages, and you can switch languages based on your preference. Language selection affects menus, buttons, and system messages.

Date and time format preferences control how dates and times are displayed. Different regions use different formats. Configuring your preferred format makes dates and times easier to read and understand.

Time zone settings ensure deadlines and times display correctly for your location. Accurate time zone settings are essential for distributed teams working across time zones. Your time zone affects how due dates and scheduled times appear.

Workspace Preferences

Workspace-level preferences affect how you interact with workspaces and projects.

Default view preferences determine which view opens when you access boards. You might prefer board view for visual workflow management, list view for detailed task lists, or calendar view for deadline-focused work. Setting defaults saves time by opening your preferred view automatically.

Column preferences control default column configurations for new boards. If you always use specific columns, setting defaults creates boards with your preferred structure automatically. This saves setup time and ensures consistency.

Task creation defaults set standard values for new tasks. Default assignee, priority, or labels can be set so new tasks start with your preferred values. These defaults save time while still allowing customization per task.

Keyboard Shortcuts and Efficiency

Keyboard shortcuts speed up common actions, reducing mouse movement and clicks. Learning and customizing shortcuts improves efficiency.

Common shortcuts include creating tasks, switching views, opening search, and navigating between items. Learning these shortcuts makes you faster over time. Most shortcuts are displayed in tooltips or help menus.

Shortcut customization isn't always available, but understanding default shortcuts helps you work efficiently. Consistent shortcut usage becomes muscle memory, significantly improving speed.

Efficiency features like quick actions, command palettes, or power user modes provide faster ways to accomplish common tasks. Exploring these features helps you find efficiency improvements that match your work style.

Accessibility Preferences

Accessibility settings help users with disabilities use Milestone effectively. These settings also benefit all users by improving usability.

Screen reader support ensures Milestone works with assistive technologies. Proper labeling, keyboard navigation, and semantic HTML make Milestone accessible to users who rely on screen readers.

High contrast modes improve visibility for users with visual impairments. These modes increase contrast between elements, making interfaces easier to see and use.

Keyboard navigation ensures all features are accessible via keyboard, not just mouse. This helps users who cannot use pointing devices and improves efficiency for power users who prefer keyboard navigation.

Privacy and Visibility Settings

Privacy settings control what information is visible to others and how your data is used.

Profile visibility determines who can see your profile information. You might want your profile visible to workspace members but not publicly. Understanding visibility settings helps you control information sharing.

Activity visibility controls who can see your activity. You might want team members to see task updates but not login activity. Understanding activity visibility helps you balance privacy with collaboration needs.

Data sharing preferences control how your usage data is used for service improvement. You might opt out of certain data uses while still using core features. Understanding data sharing helps you balance privacy with functionality.

Integration Preferences

Integration preferences control how integrations work for your account.

Integration notifications determine which integration events trigger notifications. You might want Slack notifications for task assignments but not for every GitHub commit. Configuring integration notifications helps you stay informed without being overwhelmed.

Integration defaults set standard values for integration-created items. When GitHub creates a task, default assignee or labels can be applied automatically. These defaults ensure integration-created items match your workflow preferences.

Integration permissions control what data integrations can access. Reviewing and limiting permissions helps protect privacy while enabling functionality. Understanding permission scopes helps you authorize integrations safely.

Account Security Settings

Security settings protect your account from unauthorized access.

Password management includes changing passwords, setting password requirements, and enabling password expiration. Strong passwords and regular changes help protect accounts. Understanding password management helps maintain account security.

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security beyond passwords. Enabling multi-factor authentication significantly improves account security. Understanding multi-factor options helps you choose the right method.

Session management controls login sessions. You can view active sessions, revoke sessions, and configure session timeouts. Understanding session management helps you maintain account security.

Exporting and Backing Up Preferences

Preferences can be exported or backed up to preserve your configuration.

Settings export creates a file with your preferences that can be imported later. This backup helps restore preferences if you need to reset your account or move to a new workspace.

Preference synchronization across devices isn't always available, but understanding what syncs helps you configure devices consistently. Some preferences are device-specific, while others might sync.

Restoring preferences from backup helps recover your configuration if settings are lost. Understanding restore processes helps you maintain your preferred configuration.

Getting Help with Settings

Settings questions sometimes require help or clarification. Understanding how to get settings help ensures questions are answered.

Settings documentation provides detailed information about each setting. Reviewing documentation helps you understand options and make informed choices. Documentation is updated as features change.

Support is available for settings questions. Contact support if you need help understanding settings, configuring preferences, or troubleshooting issues. Using support helps resolve questions quickly.

Community forums or help centers provide additional resources. Other users might have similar questions or helpful tips. Exploring community resources helps you learn from others' experiences.

Your profile and preferences personalize Milestone to match your work style and needs. By understanding and configuring these settings, you can create a workspace that's comfortable, efficient, and productive.
