TL;DR
Add a Time Tracking custom field to your board → open a task → click Start in the time field. Click Stop when done. You can also add manual entries. Only one active timer per user at a time.
Prerequisites
- A board with a Time Tracking custom field (added in board settings).
- Board access to create and use custom fields.
Add time tracking to a board
- Open a board → Board Settings (gear).
- Go to Custom fields or Columns & fields.
- Add a new field → choose Time Tracking.
- Name it (e.g., "Time spent") and save.
Start and stop a timer
- Open a task.
- Find the Time Tracking field.
- Click Start — the timer runs.
- Click Stop when finished — the duration is recorded.
Rules:
- Only one active timer per user at a time.
- Stopping your own sessions: you can only stop timers you started.
- The active timer shows in the header/indicator so you can stop it from anywhere.
Add manual time entries
If supported, you can log time without a timer:
- Open the task’s Time Tracking field.
- Click Add manual entry (or similar).
- Enter duration (e.g., 2h 30m) and optional note.
- Save.
View time totals
The Time Tracking field shows total time for the task. Some boards support exporting time by column or user — check board settings or reporting.
Common issues
| Issue | What to try |
|---|---|
| "You already have an active tracking session" | Stop the current timer from the task or the active timer indicator. |
| "Custom field is not a time tracking field" | Use a Time Tracking field, not a number or text field. |
| "You can only stop your own sessions" | Only the user who started the timer can stop it. |
| No Time Tracking field | Add one in Board Settings → Custom fields. |
